Meet tim Hasse

Where did you grow up and where do you call home when you’re not traveling?

I grew up in Portland, Oregon but I’ve lived in Chicago for the past 5 years! I did a little test run of being a full-time traveler over the summer, but decided I actually love having a home base. So Chicago it is for now.

You travel a lot– How did you create a career that allows you the flexibility to travel whenever you want?

I knew from Day 1 that I wanted freedom in my career and that traveling was the most important thing to me. I started my career straight out of college as a freelancer for that very reason. I was remote working before that was ever really a thing. Even when I got a full-time job I made sure it was fully remote with unlimited PTO. Now I’m back to freelance so I can focus more on my travel content!

What did you start doing and how do you see that evolving into what you want to do next?

I got my start in social media management working behind the scenes for a travel blogger. In the beginning, I said yes to EVERYTHING so I worked on every different side of digital marketing - social media, strategy, emails, blogs, etc. After trying a little bit of everything, I find myself enjoying the actual content creation aspect the most. Now that UGC is on the rise, it feels like perfect timing to pivot from day-to-day social management to focus more-so on content creation.

When did you start creating content?

In a way I’ve always been creating content for clients throughout my career, whether through traditional photography or graphic design. But I started doing a lot more hands-on capturing, editing, and creating videos when I got my full-time job (I was the content manager for @chicagobucketlist). I also started my travel account last year where I went all in on creating pretty much every day.

We’re always impressed with your travel videos and how much content you get from one trip or place you’re visiting. How do you organize or plan out the content you want to create while traveling?

I have a few staple videos I know I’m going to make like “How to Spend 1 Full Day in [City],” but other than that I try to just capture as I go and then figure out how to put it all together into videos later on.

What are some of your hobbies outside of traveling? What do you like to do when you’re home?

As long as the sun is shining I’ll always be going on walks in Chicago by the lake, around the cute neighborhoods, or through Lincoln Park. I also love my weekly Solidcore pilates class, trying new restaurants that are constantly popping up in the city, or just game nights with friends.

What originally drew you to traveling?

I grew up traveling with my family so I got the bug very early on. My mom studied abroad in Sweden, my dad solo backpacked Europe every summer in college, and my biggest inspiration was my grandparents who have seriously been all over the world. They have this old vintage map in their house with little red push pins on all of the places they’ve been and I would always stare up at that map and dream about going to all those same spots.

How has Dupe helped you creatively?

I’m obsessed with seeing what everyone else creates on Dupe, I just love all the different aesthetics and creativity. I’ve used it for some of my own social media clients, for inspo for content shoots, and it’s even pushed me creatively. Now I capture smaller moments I maybe wouldn’t have noticed before and think “oh this would be perfect for Dupe.”

Speed round: Comfort show? Favorite dish? Favorite place you’ve traveled? A place you're dying to travel to? Favorite travel activity? Favorite souvenir? Any jet lag hacks??

Friday Night Lights

Pasta (any kind, any time)

South Africa

Australia, Cappadocia, Antarctica

That first walk around a new city when you have no plans yet. I also try to take a cooking class in every place I go to

I get a postcard in every city I go to and write some memories on the back

I literally don’t accept jet lag, once I’m in a new place that is my time zone and there’s no looking back

Any current creative projects you have coming up that we should look out for??

I have some fun restaurant collabs coming up I’m excited for! I’m also going to push myself to do more writing so there mayyyy be a substack or blog coming in the near future 🤭
