What is City Girl

Okay, I'm going to be so honest for a second, the last few blog posts I've written have been made with Chat GPT (don't hate me). Personally, I hate writing. I'm not good at it and can't spell to save my life (so, when you see typos in this post, keep it to yourself). However, I can't get Chat GPT to give me a decent description of what "city girl aesthetic" actually is, so here I am writing a blog post about city girl in my pajamas because, once again, technology has failed us-- and they say AI is going to take over the world? How can it possibly take over the world when it can't even write a little blog post about a super niche, chronically online aesthetic, that has been made up by a generation mainly consisting of teenagers? I digress... So, what IS city girl aesthetic? (I have to repeat the title in the first paragraph for SEO purposes, bear with me).

Understanding the City Girl Aesthetic

Tbh, there are actually a few different types of city girl aesthetics. For the integrity of our site, however, we merged it all into one-- because let's be honest, if you can't figure out the one, breaking it down niche by niche isn't going to be that much better. Think of this aesthetic like Gossip Girl but more...modern (not like the lame re-boot though).

One thing about the city girl, she's always going to be cool. Whether she's an uptown girl or a downtown girl (we'll break those down later), you want to be her friend. They'll always know the coolest brands and have the best products. The city girl aesthetic also gives off major party-girl vibes. They love to go out and they probably have a social calendar that would send an introvert into a coma.

The Types of City Girls

The two sub-aesthetics that we're going to be breaking down today are "downtown girl" and "uptown girl" (yes, I'm so serious).

Downtown girl - think off duty Bella Hadid with a dash of 2014 tumblr

The downtown girl is probably listening to Mazzy Star and definitely has a Substack. You can catch her reading in a cafe or at the local record store. Speaking of which, she's definitely who you're hitting up when you need new music recs. Some other key traits are...

  1. Cool + casual outfits - think baggy jeans and your favorite baby tee. The downtown city girl always looks effortlessly cool and her accessories often include headphones and the free tote bag she got from the bookstore.

  2. Thrives in chillier months - fall and winter are the downtown girl's favorite seasons. Crunchy autumn leaves look good with her outfits because she loves a layering moment.

  3. Underground social scene - if you're trying to find the downtown girl, check out the basement listening party in your local dive bar, or maybe a loft party in Brooklyn. On more chill nights, you can find her drinking a dirty martinis in a dimly lit bar somewhere.

Uptown girl - think Blair Waldorf (and all of her minions)

The uptown girl LOVES to shop and she's probably hosting some of the best parties you've ever been to (don't miss out on the goodie bags). This girl can get you into the hottest restaurant in NYC and you're always wondering how her hair is so perfect.

  1. Always put together - all her clothes are perfectly tailored and she is the QUEEN of subtle accessories. You'll die over the vintage pearl necklace her grandmother gave her for her 21st birthday.

  2. Lives for spring and summer - considering 97% of the uptown girl's outfits are babydoll dresses and mini skirts, it's safe to say that spring and summer are where she thrives.

  3. Hanging with Manhattan's elite - (if you don't get the reference, turn on Gossip Girl rn). If you want an invite to the hottest parties, this is the girl you want to stick with.

Still don't get it? Here, I made you a Venn diagram

Conclusion

The City Girl aesthetic revolves around city life and busy schedules. Parties, nightlife, and romanticizing coffee dates are all staples of this aesthetic. By embracing culture in reading poetry, listening to up-and-coming music, and keeping up with the latest fashion trends you can easily embody elements of the city girl in your everyday life. (That part was written by Chat GPT).
